Liability

What it means
Coverage that may help pay if you're legally responsible for injuring someone else or damaging their property.
Tennessee example
A guest slips on an icy walkway at your Clarksville rental and is injured — liability coverage on a renters policy may respond if you're legally responsible.
Why it hits your wallet
Injury and property-damage claims against you can exceed years of premiums; liability is the 'other people' half of many policies.

Liability shows up on auto, home, renters, and umbrella policies with different limits and conditions. It generally does not pay to fix your car or your stuff — that’s first-party coverage. Knowing the difference prevents the “I thought I had full coverage” misunderstanding.
